Contact your vet who can confirm chronic kidney disease by a thorough clinical examination and pathology tests. Often one or both kidneys on palpation are hard, irregular in shape, and larger or smaller than normal. A urine sample may include the presence of blood, a high level of protein and a low specific gravity which indicates that the urine is very dilute. A blood test which shows that the urea and creatinine levels are elevated indicates the extent of the damage to the kidneys and the dog,s chances of recovery.
After treatment has been administered for a number of days, a second test is useful to determine if the levels have moved up or down.
Treatment which will vary according to the symptoms and causes may include: * antibiotics to clear up any bacterial infection;
* anabolic steriods to aid in repair of damaged kidney tissue, to prevent weight loss and to stimulate weight gain;
* a vitamin supplement (many chronic kidney disease cases are anaemic due to waste products in the blood affecting red blood cell production from the bone marrow).
Next time I will carry on with treatment for chronic kidney disease in your dog. Cheers.

regular blood tests for urea and creatinine can help the vet assess the dog’s progress. It is a sign that recovery is taking place when the dog starts to eat and drink.
Once your dog goes home it is important that it should be given a balanced diet to reduce stress on the damaged kidneys. A balanced diet containing a reduced amount of high protein, sodium and phosphorus wii help reduce the quantity of waste products produced and the work load on the kidneys. Try to avoid giving your dog meat, eggs, cheese or bones. In addition, provide your dog with fresh, clean water and good nursing. Avoid exposing it to extremes of temperature.
Your vet can provide you with a prescription diet that has been formulated by veterinary nutritionists for dogs with kidney disease. The diet is highly palatable and readily accepted by most dogs.
Next time I will talk about chronic kidney disease. Cheers.

Contact your vet. Nephritis can be readily diagnosed by blood tests for urea and creatinine. Your vet will treat your dog according to thr causes and symptoms. The treatment may involve:
* antibiotics;
* anti-vomiting drugs;
* fluid and electolyte therapy given intravenously, subcutaneously (i.e. under the skin), or orally if the dog is not vomiting. It is more difficult to give the same volume orally than it is by the other routes.
During the period when the dog is not eating or drinking at home, it should be hospitalised for fluid therapy. Otherwise it will dehydrate and exacerbate the problem because of reduced blood circulation through the kidneys and concentration of toxins (waste products) in the bloodstream.
Next time I will finish the treatment of acute kidney disease in your dog. Cheers.

This form occurs more frequently in younger dogs(2-6 years of age) and is characterised by sudden onset with obvious symtoms.

Causes:
* Infection, both bacterial and viral.
* Trauma, e.g. motor vehicle accident, leading to:
(a) direct damage to the kidneys;
(b) shock, which results in reduced blood flow causing both damage to the kidneys and reduced filtration of the blood.
* Other diseases may cause damage to the kidneys by reducing blood flow or by causing debris to accumulate in the blood, thus blocking the filtration system within the kidneys.
* Poisons, such as ethylene glycol (antifreeze), arsenic (insecticide and herbicide), thallium (rat poison) and a poisonous snake bite, which may damage the internal stucture of the kidneys,
* Certain antibiotics, e.g. neomycin and gentamycin, can cause kidney damage.
Next time I will tell you of the signs to look out for, for acute kidney disease in your dog. Cheers.

The dog has two kidneys which filter waste products from the bloodstream. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, the waste products accumulate in the blood and have a toxic or poisoning effect on the dog. Waste products build up in the blood may eventually be fatal.
If up to 75 per cent of each kidney is damaged, the dog can still function and enjoy a good quality lifestyle.
Kidney disease or Nephritis can be divided into two main groups: acute and chronic.
Next time I will begin to tell you about acute kidney disease in your dog. Cheers.

If a blood filled cavity has formed, take the dog to the vet who will give it a general anaesthetic in order to drain the blood from the ear and to stitch a splint to the back of the ear flap. This procedure will stop the drained cavity refilling with blood and will aid the ear to heal in it,s original shape.
If the haematoma is not opened and drained, the blood is converted into a hard fibrous swelling over a number of weeks. The ear contracts and is distorted in shape; it is often referred to as a cauliflower ear.
The initiating cause, such as an infection or ear mites, is treated at the same time.
